Weitere Untersuchungen über den Stoffwechsel des Phenylalanins

Abstract
Alcaptonuria was observed 2 hrs. after parenteral or oral adm. of 0.33 g. of 1-phenylalanine to rats per 100 g. wt. It disappeared in 24 hrs. Phenylpyruvic acid was excreted in the urine when the administered soln. of phenylalanine was made alkaline by Na2CO3 and NaHCO3, but only in traces when NaOH was used. In the latter case local swelling and hydration of tissue proteins at the site of injection interfered with absorption. d-Phenylalanine and l-phenyllactic acid produced no alcaptonuria, but resulted in excretion of phenylpyruvic acid. Tyrosine produced alcaptonuria only when injected with NaOH.
