Cognitive Structure and Transformation

Abstract
An empirical model of an atypical mode of cognition generated in a small group laboratory is presented. The model is derived from ostensibly anomalous cognitive and verbal data usually associated with speech errors and "pathological" mental states such as those found in dream processes. The model demonstrates that these ostensibly pathological phenomena occur regularly in so-called normal, rational states of cognitive functioning. Pieces of a verbal protocol are analyzed, demonstrating transformational structures of cognition and language as they pertain to numbers occurring in verbal productions. The data suggest a matrix structure. Implications of the model indicate that current information processing models of cognition preclude the recognition of data presented.
