Abstract
Present-day user-computer interface mechanisms provide far from optimum communication, considerably reducing the probability that full advantage is being taken of the capabilities of either the machine or of the user. A number of separate research projects are underway, aimed at investigating ways of improving the languages by which man communicates with the computer, and at developing more useful and more versatile communication channels. Several of these projects are concerned with the design of "two-dimensional" or "graphical" man-computer links. Keywords
