Abstract
The discovery of proteinuria in a urine specimen randomly collected during an examination for employment, induction into the armed services, qualifying for insurance, or a school health program ("chance" proteinuria) is a frequent and perplexing problem. It may engender considerable anxiety in the patient or family because of the general perception that such proteinuria is an omen of potentially serious underlying renal disease.
