Marcescin, an Antibiotic Substance from Serratia marcescens

Abstract
This thermostable polypeptide inhibits growth of Corynebacterium diphtheriae at 0.01 mg./ml. and Staphlococcus aureus at 0.1 mg./ml. It is very toxic to mice and sublethal doses did not protect against sensitive organisms. Yield is good from an aerated ammonium citrate-glycerol medium at 24[degree]. The antibiotic is probably different from some others obtained by similar processes. It is adsorbed by bacteria at a very high rate and it is therefore not possible to distinguish bacteriostatic from bactericidal properties.
