Abstract
This article describes and evaluates a project at Whitchurch Hospital in Cardiff which was set up to provide a safe and therapeutic short-term environment for psychiatric patients. Although the change described at the hospital takes place in a psychiatric setting, the relationship between caring and patient outcomes has implications for all nursing environments
