Pharmacokinetics of bacampicillin in infants

Abstract
Bacampicillin is an ester of ampicillin from which ampicillin is split off during absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. In adults, this yields rapid and high concentrations of ampicillin. Nine infants between 2 and 9 months of age were studied, and with a dose of 10 mg per kg body weight, individual peak values of 7.2±2.1 μg/ml were reached. The serum half-life was 0.8 h and the rate of absorption more than 4 times the elimination rate. The apparent distribution coefficient was 0.98±0.25 l/kg.
