Abstract
Performance evaluation has matured. It is an accepted discipline at universities, and industrial research laboratories maintain substantial groups of specialists. What has been accomplished? The author tries to answer this question by looking at three areas: contribution to science, contribution to engineering; and performance evaluation as business and in industry. A case study is also presented which highlight the importance of performance evaluation in the development of the IBM token ring LAN.Keywords
