Abstract
Using as subjects 18 mine rescue brigadesmen, thecardiac frequency during stepping exercise at three rates of work has been compared with that during progressive and rectangular exercise on a treadmill and with the Harvard Pack Index of physical fitness. The latter may be predicted with rather greater accuracy from the cardiac frequency during stepping than during treadmill walking. The absolute levels of frequency relative to oxygen uptake are higher during the stepping exercise than during treadmill walking; this should be taken into account when cardiac frequency is used for prediction of energy expenditure. The levels of ventilation with respect to oxygen uptake are similar for the two forms of exercise. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
