Abstract
A rigorous solution has been given for the growth of pre-breakdown current in a uniform electric field discharge gap of finite dimensions. The electron current is generated by both ionizations in the gas and the production of secondary electrons at the cathode due to both positive ions and non-resonance photons. The previous approximate solution to this problem (Lucas 1965) is shown to be in very good agreement with the rigorous solution, and is of sufficient accuracy to be used for the analysis of pre-breakdown currents, experimentally measured by the Townsend method, to yield values for the ionization coefficients.
