Hemophilus influenzae Type b Sepsis in Infant and Mother

Abstract
Hemophilus influenzae type b is an uncommon cause of neonatal sepsis. Fifteen detailed case reports of neonatal H. influenzae infection appear in the literature1-5; approximately one half of these are type b. Where information was available on the mother, only local cultures of genitourinary tract and/or pharynx were positive in mothers of infants with H. influenzae disease. Puerperal sepsis caused by this organism has not been previously reported. We wish to report a case of generalized sepsis in mother and newborn caused by H. influenzae type b. CASE REPORT A 4,972-gm boy was born to a 17-year-old gravida 0, para 0, Caucasian, afebrile mother.
