Synthesis of α-deuterated amino acids

Abstract
A non-enzymatic transamination method has been used to carbon-deuterate in high yield a representative range of amino acids. Exchange has been found to occur specifically in the α-position unless a substituent is present which can activate the β-position. The 60-Mc/s n.m.r, spectra of the deuterated and undeuterated amino acids are reported.
