Hepatic Blood FlowEstimation of hepatic blood flow is of importance in studies of portal hypertension since factors that alter blood flow generally tend to affect intrasinusoidal pressure. A variety of substances have been employed to measure hepatic blood flow, using the Fick principle wherein entry of a substance into the liver (peripheral-vein concentration) and its output (hepatic-vein concentration) is determined: P = peripheral-vein concentration of test substance. H = hepatic-vein concentration of test substance. R = removal rate of test substance.
