Studies in ultrasonic echoencephalography

Abstract
Three groups of patients were examined by ultrasonic echoencephalography and some were also studied radiologically to confirm the position of the midline echoes. In our series we apparently achieved over 98% reliability in correlating the ultrasonic determination of the M-echo with the position of the midline structures seen radiologically. Errors in experimental technique and observer bias cause us to believe this apparent accuracy of prediction is greatly exaggerated, and it is suggested that previous workers with similar high degrees of accuracy may, in fact, have inadvertently claimed a degree of accuracy that is not warranted.
