Abstract
Seventy-eight nations are examined for their qualitative attributes on three measures of trade performance: import performance, export performance, and competitive position. Tests for association among export and import performance qualities suggest that there are two distinctive groups of nations in the international economy; traders and non-traders. In addition, logit regression analyses suggest that it is a nation's export sector that determines its competitive position quality, while the import sector has little impact. Keywords
