Abstract
The mixed KCN x :KCl1-x system allows one to study the continuous change of the dipolar e (T) behavior under variation x = 0 → 1 from a paraelectric Curie-law response to the collective ferroelectric-and ferroelastic-type ordering of the CN− molecules. In pure KCN two distinct drops of e (T) appear under cooling at 83 and 168 K (the latter with hysteresis and domain formation). The drop at 83 K is connected with temperature dependent Debye losses, indicating 0.18 eV barriers for dipole reorientation. A similar behavior was found for NaCN. These dielectric-and additional ITC results-will be discussed in terms of models for the ordered and disordered CN− phases. Keywords
