Abstract
Carbohydrate fermentations were detected reliably in 1.5 to 24 hours using small amounts of cystine trypticase agar plus sodium thioglycolate and test carbohydrate, adjusted to pH 7.5, and comparatively large inocula. Hydrolysis of gelatin and indole formation were detected reliably in a comparable period of time by placing a heavy inoculum on the surface of a gelatin-agar medium and capping it with a tryptophane agar. A combined Kovacs-Frazier solution was used as an indicator. Keywords
