Abstract
The phospholipid composition and the fatty acids of the phospholipids in the erythrocyte membranes were studied in 5 patients with Friedreich's ataxia. The sphingomyelin content was found to be insignificantly reduced, that of phophatidylethanolamine was, on the contrary, increased even if non-significantly. The linoleic acid content was significantly decreased both in the total fraction of the phospholipids and in the isolated phosphatidylcholine. The relationship between the phospholipid composition and the structure and function of the membrane are discussed. Keywords
