Abstract
The ENDOR spectrum of trivalent 171Yb in Cs2NaYCl6 has been measured to determine the crystal field splitting of the 2F7/2 ground level. The pseudonuclear Zeeman correction to the spin Hamiltonian implies that the Γ8 quartet lies 225±10 cm−1 above the Γ6 ground doublet. A reasonable assumption concerning the ratio of fourth and sixth order crystal field terms then predicts the Γ7 doublet at 460 cm−1. Spin Hamiltonian parameters are found to be: g=−2.586±0.002, A=−(688.7±0.1) ×10−4 cm−1, and g′I=+(1.66±0.04) ×10−3, where the sign of the electronic g factor is inferred from theoretical considerations. Keywords
