Abstract
A 69 yr old man with a mediastinal mass had atypical lymphoid cells in peripheral blood and bone marrow. Light microscopic and EM studies showed that the mediastinal mass was a thymoma. B[bone marrow-derived]- and T[thymus-derived]-cell differentiation and PHA [phytohemagglutinin] responsiveness in the tumor and peripheral blood were consistent with T cells. After excision of the tumor and a course of radiotherapy the B/T ratio and PHA responsiveness in peripheral blood returned to normal while the atypical lymphocytes disappeared from circulation.
