Development of a Turbine-Generator Thermal Performance Monitoring System

Abstract
The development of a facility for continuously monitoring turbine-generator thermal performance, based on the measurement of heat rejected to the condenser and employing an acoustic flowmeter with an extended computer program, is described. Details are given of the laboratory and site tests carried out to study the viability of the concept and its practical application to a 500 MW turbine-generator. The results obtained confirm the new technique's ability to respond to changes in turbine-generator operating parameters and measure thermal efficiency continuously. Reference is made to the possible extension to cover monitoring of a whole power station.
