Abstract
An account is given of some of the plant communities on a group of granitic inselbergs at Idanre (Ondo Province), Nigeria (7[degree]7'' N.), which reach an altitude of 945 m. These hills are of special interest because of their topography, because they include the highest point in Western Nigeria and because they lie in a more humid climate than most other Nigerian inselbergs (rainfall about 1500 mm, 2-3 "dry" months). The flora is mainly lowland tropical but at the highest altitudes (above 760 m) a few species are present which can be regarded as montane. Above this height the forest shows characteristic features and may be regarded as "semi-montane". The chief plant communities are forest and mats of the sedge Trilepis pilosa (Benth.) Boeck. (Eriospora pilosa Benth.) in various stages of colonization of granite surfaces.
