Abstract
The sugar-containing lipids of hog spleen were separated into 3 fractions: (1) a cerebroside fraction in which the ratio of fatty acid:sphingosine:hexose was 1:1:1; (2) a cerebroside in which the ratio was 1:1:2 and (3) a ganglioside fraction with the ratio fatty acid, sphingosine, hexose, neuronic acid 1:1:3:1. Fraction 2 was hitherto unknown and appears to be a metabolic intermediate between 1 and 3. Behenic and lignoceric acids formed the bulk of the fatty acids. Both glucose and galactose were present in all fractions in the ratio 2:3 resp. The gangliosides from spleen differ from those of the brain in that the latter contain mostly stearic acid and relatively more galactose. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
