Abstract
An industrial forestry company, A.P.M. Forests Pty. Ltd., has undertaken a soil survey of its forest estate in Gippsland, Victoria, in order to improve the efficiency of intensive silviculture through inclusion of soils information in the data used for planning its operations. This paper discusses the objectives of the soil survey, survey methods, the definition of soil types and mapping units, the construction of soil maps, and the compilation of a survey report including a soil key and Map Unit Descriptions. Current and future applications of soil survey information in forestry are discussed.
