Abstract
Amphetamine (Benzedrine), 1 mg/kg, increases spontaneous motility much more in young rats than in old ones in which it has a waking effect. The intraperitoneal dose of hexobarbital (Evipan) necessary for narcosis in older rats is 60% of that for younger animals. The antagonistic effect of hexobarbital for amphetamine is less in older rats. Older animals have a decreased excitability of the CNS. The decrease in body temperature caused by intramuscular procaine is larger in older than younger guinea pigs. Time for return to normal body temperature is longer in older animals.
