Abstract
Sixty surgically resected [human] pulmonary carcinomas were studied by light microscopy and EM for engulfed alveolar cavities within the tumor mass. Alveoli had been incorporated in 12 cases: 10 epidermoid (squamous) carcinomas and 2 adenocarcinomas. They were lined by granular pneumocytes and cells transitional between granular and membranous pneumocytes. The lining cells showed a positive reaction to alkaline phosphatase. Cellular debris, leukocytes and mucus could be seen within the residual lumen. Alveoli are commonly found within pulmonary carcinomas. Accurate histological classification requires these to be differentiated from true neoplastic spaces.
