New Technologies in Transfusion Medicine

Abstract
New testing techniques and their automation in transfusion medicine offer rapid, sensitive testing and a reduction in technical staff with no loss in accuracy or safety. In this article we compare and contrast three new technologies: solid phase assays, gel tests, and affinity column. The challenge will he to determine which technology comes closest to meeting a laboratory’s needs. The solid phase technology has been fully automated and is awaiting approval by the Food and Drug Administration. Automation of the other two technologies is in progress.
