Airway Closure

Abstract
Strong evidence exists for the occurrence of airway closure in man. A distinction between mechanisms of closure may be important because of their possible different functional consequences in terms of pulmonary gas exchange. Determinants for airway patency are discussed and the closing capacity may be unpredictably altered by general anesthesia. The suggestion that the relationship between closing capacity and functional residual capacity may underlie the impaired pulmonary gas exchange seen during anesthesia was not clearly established.
