Abstract
Reproduction in these fishes, belonging to the Goodeidae, is characterized by genuine viviparity. The embryos, which are retained during gestation in the intra-ovarian cavity, develop unique absorptive organs in the form of extensive proctodaeal regions. The family, as revised by Hubbs, contains the following genera: Skiffia, Lermichthys, Characodon, Balsadichthys, Goodea, Chapalichthys, Zoogoneticus, and Girardinichthys. Specimens of 7 genera of Goodeidae proved to be suitable aquarium fishes and 2 (Goodea bilineata and Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis) have produced an excellent breeding stock. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
