THE COEXISTENCE OF TOXIC HEPATITIS, ACUTE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA AND RENAL DAMAGE FOLLOWING SULFANILAMIDE THERAPY; REPORT OF TWO CASES

Abstract
Two cases of acute hemolytic anemia, toxic hepatitis and renal damage following sulfanilamide adm. are presented. The occurrence of jaundice in the presence of hemolytic anemia is an evidence of liver damage added to the hemolytic process. Additional evidence of the factor of liver damage in the cases reported was furnished by liver function tests (hippuric acid synthesis) performed on both patients. These tests showed diminished function during the development and persistence of jaundice and the return to normal values when the jaundice began to disappear. Complete blood studies eliminate the possibility of abnormal red cell fragility as a cause of hemolysis. The coexistence of renal damage is reported and attention is called to the infrequent mention of this toxic effect of sulfanilamide.
