Abstract
A recent Raman investigation technique [1,2] has been used to study the evolution, with respect to temperature, of two depolarization ratios and deduce the behaviour of the order parameters < P2 > and < P4 > in the nematic liquid crystal p-heptyl- p'-nitrile-biphenyl without recourse to a non-nematic probe. Results show that while < P2 > values can be accounted for within the frame of existing mean-field theories, < P4 > values are somewhat lower than what could be predicted by these theoriesKeywords
