Abstract
Tuberculosis mortality in the U. S. A. continued to decline in 1949, when there were 39,000 deaths from all forms of the disease. The estimated death rate of 26.2 per 100,000 population was 9% lower than the rate for 1948, after allowance is made for changes, effective in 1949, in the procedure for reporting and classifying causes of death. The changes in procedure which account for the assignment of 4% fewer deaths to tuberculosis in 1949 and their effect on the comparability of tuberculosis mortality statistics are discussed. The decrease in the tuberculosis death rate was recorded only for white persons between the ages 15 and 64 yrs. Death rates by age and sex, irrespective of race, also showed decreases in 1949 for males 25-64 and for females 15-64 yrs. of age. A further decrease of 15% occurred in the tuberculosis death rate for the first 11 mos. of 1950. All data for 1949 and 1950 are estimated from a 10% sample of death certificates and the sampling error of the crude death rate for 1949 is [plus or minus] 1.8%.Keywords
