Current distribution measurements on the cathode of a transient plasma column

Abstract
A simple technique is used to measure the time evolution of the plasma current distribution at the cathode during a fast reversal of the arc current. Radial profiles of the current are inferred from pictures of cathode spot distributions recorded by a fast framing camera. Limitations of the technique are discussed in the context of fast current variations.
