Patterns of Polyacetylene Production I. The Diatretynes

Abstract
As part of an investigation of the relevance of polyacetylene production to taxonomy of fungi, diatretyne production in Basidiomycetes was studied. Diatretynes were detected by means of a spectrophotometric survey of cultures and further identified by paper chromatography. Where diatretynes were produced, their co-occurrence was frequently observed, a fact of interest from a metabolic point of view. The data obtained indicate that diatretyne production probably is limited to the Agaricaceae sensu lato and that in support of a classification proposed by Singer, it may be limited within this group, essentially to the genera segregated by him as Tricholomataceae.
