A Million Procrustean Beds

Abstract
There has been a significant accumulation of knowledge concerning the programs, services, and environments required by the one million older people in long-term care facilities. Nevertheless, the powerful forces at work that determine the nature of care combine to nullify that knowledge and to force a Procrustean model (i.e., “tending to produce uniformity by violent methods”). Those forces are identified and discussed and some possible future directions are explored.
