Abstract
The vegetation of some base-rich spring-fen associations in a limestone district of northern England is described. The springs themselves are surrounded by mounds of tufal; on the slopes below them there are extensive erosion surfaces with a sparse vegetation. Philonotis spp. and Cratoneuron spp. are abundant around the springs and Scorpidium scorpioides, Carex lepidocarpa, and Schoenus nigricans are frequent on the erosion surfaces. Flushed adjoining slopes have a very rich calcicolous flora. Formations of this kind have not been described before from Britain.
