Factors Affecting Survival of Kentucky Populations of the Alfalfa Weevil, Hypera postica (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) 1

Abstract
Life tables (8) were developed for alfalfa weevil, H. postica (Gyllenhal) populations in 2 Kentucky [USA] locations (Lexington and Bowling Green) during the period 1972-1976, which encompassed 4 consecutive generations. Analysis of the mortality components, expressed as k values, revealed that adult loss from emigration and larval mortality during establishment and feeding were major mortality factors that determined seasonal population changes of the insect. Adult mortality compensated for changes in larval loss; in years when larval mortality was high, adult mortality was low and vice versa. The parasite, Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson) acted independently of density. B. anurus (Thomson) was inversely density-dependent.
