Scientific reserves in state forest

Abstract
This paper describes: (a) the statutory and policy basis for the involvement of the New Zealand Forest Service in reserve management as a component of balanced management of State forest land; (b) the role of a scientific advisory panel in discharging this responsibility, and the evolution by this group of guidelines for the definition of reserves, the concept of ecological districts, and guidelines for the management of reserves; (c) the process of planning for reserves in State forests; and (d) the progress made so far.
