Application of Controlled Mechanical Impedance for Reducing Machine Tool Vibrations

Abstract
A feedback loop that instantaneously controls the tool-work motion is successfully applied to an engine lathe for the purpose of reducing vibrations. The extent to which chatter-free performance can be obtained is predicted using linear systems theory. Although the results are strictly valid for single-point turning, the basic approach is applicable to more complex machining processes.
