Abstract
1) Obstructive lesions of the pulmonary vascular tree (arteritis, tumor embolism, and chronic pulmonary embolism), 2) primary pulmonary hypertension in the absence of any demonstrable morphological lesion in the pulmonary vasculature or parenchyma, and 3) emphysema were studied. A control series of comparable age was studied. Some degree of pulmonary vascular sclerosis occurred in most of this latter group. In group 1 there was an obvious obstructive lesion, in group 2, so-called primary pulmonary hypertension, where hypertrophy of the right ventricle was found without lung or vessel disease, and in group 3 there was no correlation between the right ventricular hypertrophy and vascular disease. The latter conformed to the normal age changes of the pulmonary vascular system. Keywords
