Abstract
The incorporation of a standard model with n generations and softly broken N = 1 supersymmetry in a string theory of the heterotic type implies relations among the string scale. the compactification scale, the Planck mass and various couplings. We study these constraints, including running effects through two loops, and obtain severe limitations on possible consistent string unifications by requiring string loops not to be totally out of control. Keywords
