Neutron Diffraction Study of 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-Layer D2 Adsorbed on ZYX-Graphite

Abstract
The structure of Deuterium adsorbed on ZYX-graphite has been investigated for coverages ranging from 0.9 to 2.9 of the densest monolayer coverage. The first layer data are compatible with the already known triangular structure. The second layer promotion is explainable by assuming an oblique unitcell which it has in common with the first layer. Melting layer two will let layer one adopt its original triangular structure. The third layer condensed similarly by evoking the formation of an oblique unitcell for all three layers. The (101) reflection of this cell was detected.
