Abstract
The frequency dependent polarizability is written as an expansion in terms of R-matrix states. It is shown that this allows the development of a unified treatment of atomic polarizabilities and photoionization cross sections. A general computer program has been written and this is used to calculate the polarizability of atomic oxygen for imaginary frequency. Keywords
