THE IDENTIFICATION OF A SULFATED MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDE IN CHICK EMBRYOS, STAGES 11-23

Abstract
Papain-treated chick embryo tissues from stages 11-12 to 23 contain a mucopolysaccharide with the same electrophoretic mobility as normally sulfated chondroitin sulfate A. Hydrolysis with ribo-nuclease, deoxyribonuclease, and hyaluronidase demonstrated that this material is sensitive to the latter. Marked incorporation of S35()4 was obtained in vivo by embryos stage 16-17 in this mucopolysaccharide. In chick embryos stage 22-23, fractionation with cetylpyridinium chloride of the tissue extracts demonstrated the presence of muco-polysaccharides with different degrees of sulfation judging by their electrophoretic mobility and salt solubility.
