Platinum and the hot corrosion behaviour of a nickel based superalloy

Abstract
The hot corrosion behaviour of a platinum containing nickel based superalloy (RJM 2012) is compared with that of a similar alloy (IN 792 + Hf) without platinum. The results of burner rig testing at 800°C showed that the oxide scales on the platinum containing alloy were still very protective after 1000 h on test whilst the alloy without platinum was severely attacked after only 200 h. The influence of platinum on the degradation mechanisms is discussed.
