The kinematics of the peculiar galaxy NGC 3256

Abstract
Radial-velocity measurements of emission lines in NGC 3256 are presented and discussed. The velocities appear predominantly rotational. However, the inferred minor axis passes ∼ 1 kpc to the west of the optical nucleus. This suggests the presence of non-circular motions and a similarity to galaxies of de Vaucouleurs' Magellanic type. It is however unusually bright for such a classification. A mass of ∼ 5 × 1010M is found for the galaxy, though due to uncertainty in the inclination of the galaxy this may be a considerable underestimate.
