Streptomyces griseus (Krainsky) Waksman and Henrici

Abstract
S. griseus represents an extreme-ly variably group of organisms. This variability is particularly striking in regard to the production of antibiotic substances. Only a few of the cultures thus far isolated from natural substrates produce streptomycin; others produce grisein; still others give rise to completely different antibiotic substances; some produce no antibiotics at all. Variants of the streptomycin-producing cultures differ not only in their quantitative ability to produce streptomycin, but also in the production of other antibiotics. Studies are reported of the morphological and cultural properties of 11 cultures. The results obtained suggest that, for the time being at least, all cultures of S. griseus can be classed as members of a single, very variable species.
