A Study of Periodic School Medical Examinations. II. The Annual Increment of New “Defects”

Abstract
A group of 901 1st-grade children was followed with unusually careful medical examinations through the 4th grade. During the interval 14% of the children developed undesirable conditions not present while in the first grade. Almost half of these conditions were under care and an additional 25% were known to the school health service at the time the annual periodic examination was performed. All but 9 conditions could have been discovered by means other than performance of a medical examination. A total of 2263 medical examinations were performed with a productive case-finding yield of 1 child per 251 examinations. Periodic school medical examinations during the first 4 years of elementary school are of little value from a case-finding standpoint.
