Abstract
Multiple load flow solutions are possible for realistic systems with reasonable initial conditions. Two different mechanisms which produce multiple solutions are discussed in this paper and several examples are included. For most networks, false or extraneous solutions are easily detected because the results are unreasonable. This is not always the case, however, and this paper identifies a class of cases where extraneous solutions yield results which look reasonable. Keywords
