Search for Electric Monopole Pairs from the 3.82-Mev State ofCa48

A search was made for 3.82-Mev electric monopole pairs from the reaction ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{48}(p, p^{\prime }){\mathrm{Ca}}^{48*}$ using a CaC${\mathrm{O}}_3$ (35% ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{40}$, 62% ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{48}$) target, 6.0-Mev protons, and an intermediate-image spectrometer. No 3.82-Mev pairs from ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{48}$ were observed with an intensity as great as 0.3% that of the 3.35-Mev electric monopole pairs from ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{40}$. This result suggests that the 3.82-Mev state of ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{48}$ decays predominantly by gamma emission. This could occur if the 3.82-Mev state has spin >0, or if there are lower excited states in ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{48}$.
